Hydrogen: An Operational Solution to Accelerate Transport Decarbonization in Fos-sur-Mer
At a time when transport operators must reduce their carbon footprint while navigating volatile energy markets, hydrogen offers a credible alternative for intensive mobilityapplications. One year after commissioning its Fos-sur-Mer station, the first hydrogen infrastructure dedicated to heavy-duty vehicles in the region, TEAL Mobility continues itsambition to develop the regional hydrogen ecosystem. On the occasion of Top TransportEurope 2026, TEAL Mobility and Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility will bring together transportcompanies and industry professionals on 13 October to demonstrate, under realoperating conditions, how hydrogen can contribute to the decarbonization of professional fleets today.
Addressing a Major Challenge for the Transport Sector
At the heart of the environmental transition, decarbonization remains a major challengeacross many industries, particularly the transport sector, which is France's leadingsource of greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for 34% of total national emissions. Road freight transport alone represents nearly 21% of transport-related CO₂ emissions in France, equivalent to 25.1 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (MtCO₂) every year.
Decarbonization solutions are emerging to support the transition of the transport sector, particularly in Fos-sur-Mer, one of Europe's leading industrial hubs. Among thesesolutions, hydrogen now benefits from operational infrastructure tailored to professionalusers. For the past year, TEAL Mobility has been operating the only hydrogen refuelingstation in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. As part of the 34th edition of TopTransport Europe in Marseille, TEAL Mobility and Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility willwelcome local economic stakeholders on 13 October for a live demonstration ofhydrogen solutions designed for both freight and passenger transport.
Marseille-Fos Station: An Operational Infrastructure for Regional Mobility
With a dispensing capacity of one ton of hydrogen per day, the TEAL Mobility station inMarseille-Fos supports the deployment of decarbonized heavy mobility solutions acrossthe region. Accessible 24/7, the station offers 350-bar refueling for buses and wastecollection vehicles, and 700-bar refueling for trucks, commercial vehicles and passengercars. Thanks to refueling times comparable to conventional fuels, a truck can completea full refuel in approximately fifteen minutes, maximizing vehicle availability. The technology is already attracting strong interest from regional stakeholders. SinceFebruary 2026, Aix-Marseille-Provence Mobility Authority, through its operator Transdev, has been operating three hydrogen coaches on routes Lecar 1 and 2 within the Ouest de l’Etang Métropole network. Converted by GCK as part of a retrofit program, theseformer diesel vehicles are now powered by hydrogen and offer a range of nearly 450kilometers, fully meeting operational mobility requirements. Hydrogen-powered truckscan travel up to 800 kilometers on a single fill. The station is also used by Genesis Magma Racing, Hyundai Motor Group's motorsport entity based in Le Castellet.
"Located at the heart of the Fos-sur-Mer industrial basin, the Marseille-Fos station hasthe capacity to serve up to 20 heavy-duty vehicles per day. Although it has not yetreached full utilization, it was designed to meet the needs of industrial companies, freight operators and passenger transport providers across the region. With twodispensers dedicated to trucks and coaches, as well as one dispenser for light-dutyvehicles, we are ready to support these professionals in their transition to hydrogen,"explains Isabelle Drevon, Business Developer at TEAL Mobility.
"Every diesel truck replaced by a hydrogen-powered vehicle can prevent up to 80 tons of CO₂ emissions per year. This represents a major decarbonization lever for transportoperators. With the Hyundai XCIENT Fuel Cell, the world's first mass-produced fuel celltruck, we provide a proven solution already demonstrating its effectiveness with morethan 160 vehicles operating on European roads," adds Nicolas Cottin, FranceBusiness Development Manager at Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility.
13 October: Demonstrating Hydrogen Solutions for Transport Decarbonization
The decarbonization of freight transport will be a key focus of Top Transport Europe 2026, taking place at the Palais du Pharo in Marseille on 14 and 15 October.
Ahead of the exhibition, TEAL Mobility and Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility will welcomearound fifty transport stakeholders to the Marseille-Fos station on 13 October. The eventwill provide participants with the opportunity to discover how a hydrogen stationoperates, engage with industry experts and discuss transport decarbonizationchallenges within the region.
Attendees will be able to explore the Hyundai XCIENT FCEV, a 26-ton fuel-cell rigidtruck equipped with a hook-lift system, watch a live refueling demonstration of thevehicle, and discover a hydrogen coach retrofitted by GCK Mobility and operated byTransdev.
Beyond the demonstrations, the day will highlight hydrogen initiatives already underwayacross the region. Hyliko, a pioneer in hydrogen heavy-duty vehicle conversion andoperations, will make one of its retrofitted hydrogen trucks available to regional transportcompanies and shippers, enabling them to test the technology under real operatingconditions and assess its operational and environmental benefits firsthand.
One year after its commissioning, the TEAL Mobility Marseille-Fos station illustrates thepotential of hydrogen to support the transformation of the transport sector. Through thisdemonstration and networking event, TEAL Mobility and Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility aimto show that practical solutions already exist to help companies address environmentalchallenges while contributing to the development of a dynamic and operational regionalhydrogen ecosystem
